Registration vs. Access
The fact that you are "here" does not necessarily mean that you are officially registered for this course through your SUNY campus and Registrar. Through SLN you secure a password that gives you access to enter this online classroom. You can do this without registering for the course. However, if you have not registered and paid tuition through the SUNY institution offering this course, you will be blocked from the course, and more importantly, you will not get credit for the course.
If you are not sure that you are registered for this course, check now! How do you do that? YOU MUST CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE SUNY REGISTRAR DIRECTLY. Find the registration contact information for your SUNY campus by clicking on the "Campus Contacts" tab above or below in the navigation bar for this page. You will need to have your Social Security Number, along with the course code and title when you speak to your campus contact to confirm your registration.
If you know you have completed the official SUNY registration and payment process for your campus you can proceed with reading the rest of the Course Information documents.
YOUR NEXT STEPS
The Bulletin Board is a discussion area for our class outside the context of a particular course module. Just as you have the opportunity to talk or chat with each other or with the instructor when taking a conventional classroom course, you should also have the opportunity to do the same in a web course. The Bulletin Board is available only to students enrolled in this class to post and/or read messages and respond. These can include questions or comments to other students and me about course material, assignments, readings, etc. It is also a place where you can go to socialize and have open discussion on subjects of your interests. I may use this area to make announcements during the semester, so be sure to check it every time you "come to class." We need to have some information on where to find the Bulleting Board in Angel.
Meet Your Classmates is where you will introduce yourself to the class. You will find my profile and the profiles of the other students in this course. Your profile will help us get to know each other and begin to build a sense of class community, so please feel free to personalize your profile by adding a link to your favorite web site or attach a digital image of yourself. Since profiles will be posted as people join the course, you may have to return to Meet Your Classmates several times during the first few weeks of class to read the latest entries.
As your next steps, click on Course Map link and complete the following tasks:
1. Click on Bulletin Board. Post an item to start a discussion or read other students' responses, if there are any, and respond.
2. Click on Meet Your Classmates. Select your name from the list to open your blank profile. Then click the Edit button in the upper left of the page and enter information to introduce yourself to the class. When finished, click the 'Submit Your Personal Profile' button in the lower left of the page.
When you have completed these two tasks, you are ready to begin the first module of the course.

Instructions for Assignment
You may want to print this document out.
This document provides instructions on how to create a written assignment in this course. Be sure you have practiced creating a written assignment in theSLN Student Orientation BEFORE you attempt to submit your first graded assignment.
Composing your assignment
Normally, you should compose your response using your word processor or on paper. This will give you the opportunity to revise, proofread, and spell check. When you have completed your answer, return to the assignment document and click the "Create Assignment" button at the bottom of the page. Follow the instructions for entering text.
Make sure to read the directions for each assignment carefully for details on required length of your assignment, due dates, and any thing else that may be specific to the assignment.
Ways to move your work to the "Written assignment" form
There are several options for generating and submitting your written assignment. Choose the option you feel most comfortable with (read more about each in the SLN Student Orientation). You can:
1. Type directly (my note - not recommended) on-line in the assignment form field (my note - this should say message field) (a box that allows you to type directly in it)
2. Use the HTML Editor - click on where it says HTML Editor
3. Work on your word processor, then "copy and paste" the contents from your open word processing document into the online form field or HTML Editor
4. Work on a word processor, save the file as an .rtf file, then "attach"the assignment as a file using the fields at the bottom of the Written Assignment page. See the SLN Student Orientationfor complete instructions on using file attachments. using the attachments button at the bottom of the page.
Submitting your written assignment
Click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page to submit your assignment. Before you can submit your assignment, you must select one of the following:
Private save (your professor cannot see your work; use this option if you are not finished; to continue working on your assignment, click the Edit button on the document).
Save for professor (submits your work to the professor; only you and the professor can see your assignment. You will not be able to "Edit" your document).
Save for class (your assignment is public for the entire class to read. DO NOT USE THIS OPTION UNLESS INSTRUCTED BY YOUR PROFESSOR).
Save your work in My Files as a substitute for Private Save.
Create a discussion for this as a substitute for Save for class.
Evaluations
The evaluation for your assignment will appear directly under your documentand in the Gradebook. Evaluations are private and can only be read by the student and professor.
Multi-Part Written Assignments - take the form of a Quiz in Angel.
We need to create additional directions for this.
Instructions for Discussion
You may want to print this document out.
Your next task will be to participate in an online discussion. This document provides instructions on how to initiate and respond to discussions. You can also return to the SLNStudent Orientation for a "refresher."
A "discussion thread" is started each time you submit a discussion item. Each response to the original question is indented once - a response to a response is indented a second time - etc. This system of indents helps us determine which responses go together. By using the "collapse" and "expand," , and "next" or "previous" document menu options in the navigational bar of the course, or by using the "collapse" and "expand" "twisties," you can follow the give and take of a threaded discussion - the web equivalent of a classroom discussion.
Responding to the main item
To compose your response to a main discussion item you are reading, click on the "Respond" link located at the bottom of that page. It is Reply in Angel In the form, title your response in the Subject field and then respond in the boxed area. We need to encourage them to use the HTML editor since it is much better to do this. A good title tells something of the nature of your personal response. "Response to Discussion 1" is not a very useful title, particularly if everyone in your course uses the same one.
Responding to someone else's response
If you are already reading someone else's response document, click on the "Respond" link located at the bottom of that page to respond to that response. It is Reply in Angel Make sure that you respond on the document intended so that your contribution will line up in the threaded discussion in the right place.
Submitting your response
When you have completed your response, click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page. It is Post in Angel
Correcting your response
If you discover an error in your document after you submit it, a misspelled word or an incomplete thought, you can "Edit" your document. The Editbutton appears at the top at the upper right hand corner of your document after you submit it the first time. When you have finished your edits, click the submit button at the bottom of the page. Big problem is that it appears that the students can edit even after the rating is given. Also, I can't find where the rating is displayed when logged in as the student.
Quality discussion responses
Responses such as: "I agree.", "Good question" or "Good answer" / Any response that is just an opinion, or is unsubstantiated / any response that is carelessly typed, poorly thought-out, grammatically incorrect or confusing / any response that is disrespectful of another student or any other person, etc., are not acceptable.A high quality response contains information from the textbook or other valid source, or applies a concept from the text or course in a meaningful way, or facilitates understanding of the course material or topic. Please review information in the Course Information area of the course for guidelines and specific information on how you will be evaluated on your participation in "Course Discussions."
Netiquette
As discussion is of a public nature, please observe proper "netiquette" -- courteous and appropriate forms of communication and interaction over the Internet (in online discussions). This means no personal attacks, obscene language, or intolerant expression. All viewpoints should be respected.
Stuff In Both That should Not Be there:
Contact Information
For private communication with me, please use your private area in the Private Folders section of the course designed specifically for this purpose. We need info about the other option of using internal mail.
If you go to the Private Folders section of the course and do not see a private are designated for you, go to the Meet your Classmates section of the course and fill out and save your personal profile document. This action triggers the creation of your individual Private Folder area. There is no Meet Your Classmates and the Private Folder should be there automatically.
